Around 40% of my clients say they can’t seem to start. They are high-achieving people in general, and yet feel procrastination engulfs them.

You know the feeling, right? That important task/project sits there. You’ve carved out the time. You know you need to do it. But instead, you find yourself reorganizing your desk, making endless to-do lists, dooms-scrolling, or at best, prioritizing less important tasks to fill your day. Then, the guilt sets in. You call yourself lazy, undisciplined, dis-organized.

The Hidden Faces of Procrastination

I am sure you have read up many articles, self-help books or watched several YouTube videos and perhaps even attended motivational lectures. You know it cognitively. You know its not laziness. Yet, it's your go-to companion, unwillingly. In my practice, I see 4 faces of procrastination, which one sounds like you -

  1. The mountain is too big (Overwhelm): For some, its the sheer size, scope and complexity of the task/ project, that they are overwhelmed. The brain calculates and arrives at the conclusion that the task is not worth of our energy. The safest option is to not start at all. It’s not a lack of ability; it’s a lack of a starting point.

  2. I only do perfect (The Performance Trap): Some clients are not avoiding the work; but the judgment they fear will come if the work isn’t flawless. The pressure to be perfect is so immense that not starting feels safer than risking a failure. This is often tied to a deep-seated need to prove their worth.

  3. The avoidance focus (Distraction & Loneliness): Our modern epidemic - notifications, multi-tasking, another browser tab. For some, the silence of working alone is itself a distraction, leading to a sense of isolation that makes focused work feel unbearable. For others, being surrounded is enough trigger to tune out the world. Yet some, drown into screen, subconsciously avoiding the feelings itself. The clients who are juggling moonlighting, the mental load of doing the work in a lonesome place, because internal voices are too loud, procrastination is an inevitable trap.

  4. Pouring from an empty cup: (The Energy Deficit): Some clients aren't procrastinating because of lack of time, but they are exhausted. The willpower is a finite resource, and if it’s being drained by a draining job or personal stress; or the grind of a side hustle, there’s simply none left for the important tasks. The brain is choosing the path of least resistance to conserve energy.

At the deepest level, it is the fear, overwhelm, loneliness and a system that’s working against you.

The real work of overcoming procrastination isn't about time management. It's about mindset and emotion management.

So what to do?

Well, if I told you some simple tricks and steps, I bet, they won't work for you.

Why?

Because you know cognitively. There is no dearth of the resources online. You have tired many of these things. But they haven't worked for you. They will not work for you, if anyone simply told you what to do.

You don't need more shame. It’s about understanding why your brain is hitting the brakes and gently teaching it that the task is safe, manageable, and worth doing imperfectly. You need a better strategy and a thinking partner who can help you see the blind spots you can't see yourself. Let's build your personalized "Unstuck" plan. Book your introductory call today.
